Marg and Leigh's travels around the world

We are two retired women from New Zealand, busy travelling the world. Our quest is to experience other cultures before they are changed beyond recognition, and see endangered animals and environments before they disappear. We hope you like our blog and enjoy our exploits. We sure have had fun getting here.

Goodbye Austria Hello Slovakia

After navigating out of Vienna we had a seamless border crossing into Slovakia & it’s capital Bratislava. We found our way to Senec which, according to our research, had 2 camping sites. The first one was closed except for 1 caravan & a fair ground next-door with a number of shifty looking characters wandering around. We decided we didn’t really like the look of this so after trying to go down a one way street the wrong way, found another site that had 1 other campervan there. This was a lovely Dutch couple with limited English who told us that it was a free site. It was a nice quiet location but the facilities were all closed. We decided to stay here for 3 nights & by the time we hit the road again we were low on water & were in need of power.

Restaurant is in round UFO part of tower.
While in Senec we drove into Bratislava & found a parking spot cross the river. Always a challenge in old cities with narrow streets & big campervan! The old city was very attractive, compact & well looked after but was beginning to be dwarfed by the newer part of town. We went up a very tall tower on one end of the New Bridge (Bridge of Slovak National Uprising) which is situated 85 meters above the Danube River. It was reopened in June 2005 and named "UFO" after its flying saucer shape. We had an amazing lunch with 360 degree views of the city accompanied with an occasional sway of the tower when traffic went over the bridge!
